Students explore the basics of acting and improv through fun and dynamic theater games in this engaging and interactive class. Designed for all levels, this class focuses on building foundational skills such as character development, quick thinking and collaboration. Through a variety of creative exercises, students learn how to express themselves confidently on stage while working as part of an ensemble. This class offers a fun and supportive environment to discover the joy of performance and spontaneity.

MUSICAL THEATER SINGING

This group singing class is perfect for students who love show tunes. Students learn songs from their favorite Broadway shows while focusing on healthy vocal and breathing techniques, creating a character through song, and developing overall stage presence. Basic music theory and sight-reading instruction is included. All levels are welcome as students sing in group numbers and explore their specific skill level through solos and duets.

Explore the “fun”damentals of acting and improv! Students learn foundational acting and improv skills and explore how to use their bodies, voices and minds to create characters and imaginary circumstances. Through interactive warm-ups and skills-building activities, students develop improv and acting techniques as they build confidence and stretch their imagination. This class will strengthen social interactions and develop effective listening and communication skills. All levels welcome.

BROADWAY DANCE SKILLS

Broadway Dance Skills is the exploration of traditional and contemporary Broadway dance that includes elements of ballet, jazz and modern dance. It’s the perfect class for students who want to improve their dance foundations and focus on steps and routines found in musical theater dance. Students refine their skills for auditions and performances. This intermediate to advanced-level class hones students’ core technique while introducing a variety of movement styles. Previous dance and/or musical theater experience recommended.

Students unlock their vocal potential in this comprehensive singing technique class designed specifically for students who want to advance their singing skills. This class covers aspects of singing such as fundamentals of vocal production, vocal anatomy, breathing techniques and vocal health through their favorite Broadway show tunes. Whether a beginner or more experienced, students gain valuable insights and learn practical applications that enhance musical theater skills and strengthen performances. This is a great class to take before auditioning for any role and take your singing skills to the next level.

Principles of acting are explored in this fun and supportive class created specifically for teens. Students learn to “dig deep” in this foundational class, exploring basic acting techniques, analyzing scripts, and developing full-bodied characters from the inside out using monologues and scenes taken from contemporary plays. Warm-ups, theater games and in-class performances help students grow in self-confidence, public speaking and creativity. Family and friends are invited to a showcase at the end of the semester.

Teaching artists from The Performance Project

In an all-encompassing theatrical experience, students learn acting, singing and dancing as well as production disciplines such as costumes, props, make-up and staging and use these skills to put on a performance in the Amaturo Theater. This special adaptation of the nine-time Tony Award-winning Broadway musical Fiddler on the Roof JR. follows Tevye the milkman as he tries to protect his daughters and his way of life from a changing world. Set in the little village of Anatevka, the story centers on Tevye, a poor dairyman, and his five daughters.

This class is offered in partnership with The Performance Project.

Students are expected to attend the first day of class as auditions will be held to cast roles for the final performances.

This isn’t just another musical… it’s a pilot production, which means you’ll be among the first performers in the country to bring The Heart of Rock and Roll Jr. to life. The Broward Center has been selected by Music Theater International (MTI) to produce a pilot production of this brand-new “junior” show.

Students won’t just tell the story – they will help shape the story for every future cast that performs it. As part of the process, students continue developing their musical theater skills while working on every element of the new show. Students improve their singing, refine musical theater dance skills and develop fun characters on stage in an experience that culminates in 3 performances on stage in the Amaturo Theater.

Feel the power of love in this jukebox musical featuring the songs of the legendary pop rock band Huey Lewis and the News. The Heart of Rock and Roll is a smart, funny, heartfelt throwback to the era of big feelings, classic rom-coms. Set in 1987 and jam-packed with Huey Lewis’ megahits such as “Do You Believe in Love,” “Hip to Be Square” and “If This Is It,” The Heart of Rock and Roll centers on a couple on the cusp of their futures — Bobby, a rock and roller who’s traded his guitar for the corporate ladder, and his boss, Cassandra, who has always put the family business first. When they both get a second shot at their dreams, it takes “The Power of Love” and a little help from their friends to figure out what kind of life they really want. Advanced techniques in acting, singing and dance are integrated into the rehearsal process, culminating in a full-length musical production in the Amaturo Theater.

When an overworked mother and her teenage daughter magically swap bodies, they have just one day to put things right again. Freaky Friday, a new musical based on the celebrated novel by Mary Rodgers and the hit Disney films, is a heartfelt, comedic, and unexpectedly emotional update on an American classic. By spending a day in each other's shoes, Katherine and Ellie come to appreciate one another's struggles, learn self-acceptance, and realize the immeasurable love and mutual respect that bond a mother and daughter.

Broward Center Spotlights is a performing vocal ensemble for students who love to sing in front of an audience. This audition-based musical theater program trains students to perform solos, duets and group numbers along with choreography for various Broward Center and community events. Team-taught by a professional music director and choreographer, students gain top-tier instruction in song and dance, musicianship, improved vocal technique and song interpretation, as they build dance skills and stage presence using some of Broadway’s greatest songs. Past appearances include Christmas on Las Olas, fall holiday festivals, live television shows, Coffeehouse Cabarets and Broadway at the Beach.

Class fee includes a Broward Center Spotlights T-shirt.

Children must be ready to participate in the class independently.
