RUPAUL’S DRAG RACE AND BRAZILIAN ARTIST NEY MATOGROSSO HIGHLIGHT JULY EVENTS AT THE BROWARD CENTER

Published: May 19, 2022

Stars of RuPaul’s Drag Race and legendary Brazilian artist Ney Matogrosso are among the artists at the Broward Center for the Performing Arts this July in a month when talented teens also take to the stage and a staged reading unveils a new play.

The Broward Center and AEG Presents bring RuPaul's Drag Race “WERQ The World Tour” in an all new production to the Au-Rene Theater on Friday, July 8 at 8 p.m. An experiment gone wrong sends the audience spiraling through time with no way of returning to the present. Kameron Michaels, Rose, Vanessa Vanjie, Yvie Oddly and all finalists from the upcoming 14th Season join the audience on a journey through iconic periods of history in hopes of finding their way back to 2022. The tour is presented by Voss Events in collaboration with World of Wonder and VH1. This event contains adult language or content. Tickets are $39.50-$89.50 with $119.50 Spirit Club Level tickets and a $249.50 VIP Package that includes a premium seat and a meet and greet with the cast before the show.

Teens ages 13-18 in the Young Professionals Camp star in Disney's Frozen Jr.: A Summer Theater Camp Production featuring a cast of beloved characters and loaded with magic, adventure and plenty of humor.  Based on the 2018 Broadway musical, the production brings Elsa, Anna and the magical land of Arendelle to life onstage. Staged in the Amaturo Theater, the musical features all of the memorable songs from the animated film, with music and lyrics by Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez, plus five new songs written for the Broadway production. Young Professionals Camp is open for enrollment by audition only for campers with previous experience. Performances in the first week are Friday, July 8 at 10 a.m. and noon and Saturday, July 9 at 2 p.m. Week two performances are Friday, July 15 at 10 a.m. and noon and Saturday, July 16 at 2 p.m.  Tickets to peformances on Friday are $5 with $3 lap seats for children 12 months and under.  Tickets to Saturday matinees at 2 p.m. are $10 with $5 lap seats for children 12 months and under.

A sensory inclusive performance of Disney's Frozen Jr.: A Summer Theater Camp Production will be presented in the Amaturo Theater on Saturday, July 9 at 11 a.m. and Saturday, July 16 at 11 a.m. The peformances include pre-show arts and crafts activities with Young at Art Museum and a post-show meet and greet with the cast. Sensory-inclusive performances create a welcoming and supportive environment for children and adults on the autism spectrum as well as for individuals with other sensitivity issues or developmental disabilities. Slight adjustments are made to the productions including reduced sound levels, no flashing or strobe lights and minimal special effects. Ticket buyers will receive an email prior to the performance with a link to a character guide and short video about attending the theater. To provide additional comfort for attendees and their families, an area adjacent to the theater is designated as a quiet room with specially trained volunteers to provide audience support. Patrons may bring their own headphones, fidgets and other calming items into the theater or borrow these items at the theater. General admission is $10 and $5 lap tickets for children 12 months and under.

The extravagant artist Rolling Stone magazine ranked as being one of the top three greatest Brazilian artists of all time makes a rare U.S. visit in July. One of the most unique and dazzling performers to have ever come out of Latin America, Ney Matogrosso performs in the Au-Rene Theater on Friday, July 15 at 8 p.m. A creative powerhouse from his time with the band Secos e Molhados in the 1970s through today, he is renowed for his flamboyance, stage theatrics, loud costumes and a singular high-pitched voice. Tickets are $48-$85.

A staged reading of Seeking, a new play by Arts Prevails Project founder Darius Daughtry, is presented in the Abdo New River Room on Saturday July 23 at 4 and 6 p.m. and Sunday, July 24 at 6 p.m. Seeking follows a young musician’s quest for independence as he discovers finding his future hinges on his family’s past. Audiences are invited to provide feedback to the author in chat backs after each performance. This program is part of the Broward Center's Arts for Action: Black Voices initiative which aims to use the arts as a tool or catalyst to heighten awareness, deepen knowledge, and mobilize action on social justice issues. Tickets are $15.
