Sensory Inclusive Performance: It's Okay to be Different

Broward Center Presents

November 5, 2022

Event Details

This Sensory Inclusive Performance is intended to create a welcoming and supportive environment for children and adults on the autism spectrum as well as individuals with other sensitivity issues or developmental disabilities. To create a sensory-Inclusive setting, slight adjustments have been made to the production including reduced sound levels, no flashing or strobe lights and minimal special effects. An area adjacent to the theater has been designated as a Quiet Room with specially trained volunteers to provide audience support.

Three contemporary stories by New York Times bestselling author and illustrator Todd Parr come to life with Parr’s signature blend of playfulness and sensitivity. Adapted and staged for young audiences by The Mermaid Theater, this hour-long production features three books from his collection. “It's Okay to Be Different” cleverly delivers important messages of acceptance, understanding, and self-confidence. “The Earth Book” is a sweet homage to our beautiful planet inspiring everyone to do their part to keep the Earth happy and healthy. “This is My Hair” is a funny exploration of how silly hair can be and that no matter how your hair looks, you should always feel good about yourself. These stories encourage early literacy, enhance emotional development, celebrate multiculturalism and promote character growth.
