Since its withdrawal from the Iranian nuclear deal, the Trump administration has imposed uffocating sanctions on Iran with the objective of forcing the Iranian regime to renegotiate a new agreement according to which Iran will disable all paths to weaponize its nuclear program, curb its ballistic missile development and change its regional behavior. Iran has thus far rejected this all-embracing approach of strategic linkage and perceived the sanctions as economic warfare meant to inflict heavy suffering on the Iranian people and force the regime from power. In fact, Iran (and its proxies) has reportedly fired at oil tankers in the Gulf and shot down an American drone. Though the Trump administration did not retaliate for the downing of the drone, it threatened the Iranian regime with obliteration if U.S. forces are attacked. The threat of war has never been greater and more consequential. Dr. Rabil, in this special lecture, will provide the background against which Washington and Tehran face off, offer ideas about how to secure stability in the Gulf, and probe potential conflict scenarios should war erupt.
