DRAMATIC PLAY: PIRATES & MERMAID TALES

Arrrrr you ready for a fun and exciting class? Your child’s favorite characters come to life through creative play in this introductory acting class. Kids imagine, explore and create as they act out their own stories and adventures each week based on a different book focusing on pirates, mermaids and sea adventures. Kids learn about story structure while increasing their vocabulary, self-esteem, creativity and problem-solving skills. Students learn to use their body, voice and imagination to save the world and create a happily ever after!

LET’S DANCE: STEPS & STORIES

Grades: Pre-K and K

Kids dance out their favorite stories in this fun and energizing class that brings storybook characters to life using creative movement. Kids jump, spin, move and step to the beat as they focus on skills such as listening, sharing, coordination and rhythm. As they develop their imagination and creativity in class, they develop a sense of independence and gain self- confidence.

The dynamic world of musical theater is explored in this introductory skills-building class. Students develop the basics of singing, dancing and acting while learning songs and choreography from a wide range of popular Broadway musicals in a supportive environment. Students are trained in stage direction, dance steps and terminology, and healthy vocal production including breathing techniques, matching pitch and singing in an ensemble. Family and friends are invited to an open class during the semester. Two sessions of this class are recommended.

SING! DANCE! ACT!

Grades: 2–3
Saturdays 10:15 AM – 11:15 AM | $310

Class dates: 2/9 – 5/4

In this intermediate class, the primary focus is to teach students how to use all three skills within the context of a Broadway scene and song and perform each with technical skill, confidence, and strong stage presence appropriate to their age and grade level. Team-taught by a professional music director and a professional choreographer, students build upon the skills learned in Introduction to Musical Theater and continue to develop healthy singing through exercises and warm ups, vocal support and placement, choreography style for musical theater, characterization and expressive performance, stage principals, and maintain focus during acting games or scenes. This class may be taken more than once to develop existing talents and discover new abilities through skills-building activities and theater games in singing, dancing, and acting. This class culminates with a showcase for family and friends.

SING! DANCE! ACT!

In this intermediate class, the primary focus is to teach students how to use all three skills within the context of a Broadway scene and song and perform each with technical skill, confidence, and strong stage presence appropriate to their age and grade level. Team-taught by a professional music director and a professional choreographer, students build upon the skills learned in Introduction to Musical Theater, while refining and expanding upon healthy singing exercises, breath control, simple harmonies, choreography style and sequences, stage presence, character creation and ensemble building. This class may be taken more than once to develop existing talents and discover new abilities. This class culminates with a showcase for family and friends.

THEATER GAMES

GRADES: 3-5
WEDNESDAYS 5:45 PM – 6:45 PM | $310

Students explore the fundamentals of acting using interactive games and fun warm-ups in a supportive environment. Theater games teach valuable skills as students learn basic improv techniques, build confidence and stretch their imagination. Through improvisation work, students gain spontaneity, strengthen social interactions and learn effective listening and communication skills. All levels welcome.

YOUTH SPRING MUSICAL: WIZARD OF OZ

Grades: 4–8
Mondays 6:00 PM–9:00 PM | $385

In an all-encompassing theatrical experience, students learn acting, singing and dancing as well as production disciplines such as costumes, props, make-up and staging and use these skills to put on a final show. Grab your ruby slippers and get ready for a musical journey down the yellow brick road with your favorite characters including the Scarecrow, the Tin Man, the Lion, Dorothy and Toto for this production of The Wizard of Oz. This class is offered in partnership with The Performance Project School of the Arts. Fee includes script and basic costume.

HIP HOP

Students jam out in this fun, high-energy dance class that showcases the foundations of hip hop through funk-filled moves, grooves and choreography.  Students develop rhythmic connection, body awareness, stamina and self-confidence as they explore their own personal style and expression through hip hop movement and music. All levels welcome.

LET'S PUT ON A SHOW! Seussical KIDS

Grades: 1–3
Thursdays 4:30 PM – 6:00 PM | $375

See your child perform in Seussical KIDS, a fantastical musical extravaganza that’s fun for the whole family. See Horton the Elephant, the Cat in the Hat and all your favorite Dr. Seuss characters spring to life onstage. Team-taught by an experienced vocal instructor/acting teacher and a professional choreographer, this class allows young students to explore the basics of acting, singing and dancing while experiencing the process of auditions, rehearsals and putting on scenes and songs from a show. Kids create wonderful memories on stage in the JM Studio Theater while having fun! Fee includes script and basic costume.

The Broward Center has been selected by Music Theater International (MTI) to produce a pilot production of Matilda Jr. As one of the first theaters in the country to produce the junior version of the hit Broadway show (prior to the show’s official release), we are offering students this unique opportunity to be part of the pilot production. In the spring session, students continue to develop their musical theater skills while rehearsing for Matilda Jr. Performers will have the opportunity to provide input in this new adaptation as the show progresses further in development. The rehearsals will culminate in two performances of the pilot production. As part of the creation and editing process, all scripts, roles, scenes and characters are subjected to change at any time prior to the final performance.
