DRAMATIC PLAY: UNDER THE BIG TOP

Your child’s favorite stories come to life through creative play in this introductory acting class. Kids imagine, explore and create as they act out their own stories and adventures each week based on a different book focusing on all things circus; from acrobats and lions to elephants and ring leaders! Kids learn about story structure while increasing their vocabulary, self-esteem, creativity and problem-solving skills. Students learn to use their body, voice and imagination as they perform in the greatest show on earth.

DRAMATIC PLAY: fAIRY tALES & SUPERHEROES

Your child’s favorite fairy tale character or superhero comes to life through creative play in this fun and exciting class.  Kids imagine, explore and create as they act out their own stories and adventures based on a different book each week focusing on a fairy tale or superhero. Kids learn about story structure while increasing their vocabulary, self-esteem, creativity and problem-solving skills. Students learn to use their body, voice and imagination to save the world and create a happily ever after!

See your child perform in Disney’s 101 Dalmatians KIDS, the fur-raising adventure featuring Cruella De Vil, Disney's most outrageous villain, and 101 of the most adorable heroes to set their paws onstage. Team-taught by an experienced vocal instructor/acting teacher and a professional choreographer, this class allows young students to explore the basics of acting, singing and dancing while experiencing the process of auditions, rehearsals and putting on scenes and songs from a show. Kids create wonderful memories on stage in the JM Studio Theater while having fun! Fee includes script and basic costume.

INTRO TO MUSICAL THEATER

The dynamic world of musical theater is explored in this introductory skills-building class. Students develop the basics of singing, dancing and acting while learning songs and choreography from a wide range of popular Broadway musicals in a supportive environment. Students are trained in stage direction, dance steps and terminology, and healthy vocal production including breathing techniques, matching pitch and singing in an ensemble. This class culminates with a showcase for family and friends. Two sessions of this class are recommended.

SING! DANCE! ACT!

Grades: 2–3
Saturdays 10:15 AM – 11:15 AM | $310

In this intermediate class, the primary focus is to teach students how to use all three skills within the context of a Broadway scene and song and perform each with technical skill, confidence, and strong stage presence appropriate to their age and grade level. Team-taught by a professional music director and a professional choreographer, students build upon the skills learned in Introduction to Musical Theater and continue to develop healthy singing through exercises and warm ups, vocal support and placement, choreography style for musical theater, characterization and expressive performance, stage principals, and maintain focus during acting games or scenes. This class may be taken more than once to develop existing talents and discover new abilities through skills-building activities and theater games in singing, dancing, and acting. This class culminates with a showcase for family and friends.

In this intermediate class, the primary focus is to teach students how to use all three skills within the context of a Broadway scene and song and perform each with technical skill, confidence, and strong stage presence appropriate to their age and grade level. Team-taught by a professional music director and a professional choreographer, students build upon the skills learned in Introduction to Musical Theater, while refining and expanding upon healthy singing exercises, breath control, simple harmonies, choreography style and sequences, stage presence, character creation and ensemble building. This class may be taken more than once to develop existing talents and discover new abilities. This class culminates with a showcase for family and friends.

ADVANCED MUSICAL THEATER WORKSHOP:
THE PILOT PRODUCTION OF SOMETHING ROTTEN JR.

The Broward Center has been selected by Music Theater International (MTI) to produce a pilot production of Something Rotten Jr. As one of the first theaters in the country to produce the junior version of the hit Broadway show (prior to the show’s official release), we are offering students this unique opportunity to be part of the pilot production. In the spring session of Advanced Musical Theater Workshop: Something Rotten Jr., students continue to develop their musical theater skills while rehearsing for the pilot production of Something Rotten Jr. The rehearsals will culminate in three performances of the pilot production in April 2020 in the Amaturo Theater. As part of the creation and editing process, all scripts, roles, scenes and characters are subjected to change at any time prior to the final performance.

In an all-encompassing theatrical experience, students learn acting, singing and dancing as well as production disciplines such as costumes, props, make-up and staging and use these skills to put on a final show in the Abdo New River Room. Based on the award-winning Broadway musical and the smash hit motion picture, Legally Blonde JR. is a fabulously fun journey of self-empowerment and expanding horizons with instantly recognizable songs, humor and sass. This class is offered in partnership with The Performance Project School of the Arts. Fee includes script and basic costume.
