Points of Culture
The Broward Center for the Performing Arts was designated a Point of Culture by the Brazilian Ministry of Culture in January 2006. The Broward Center is one of the first Points of Culture to be named in the United States and the first performing arts center to receive this prestigious honor.

This distinction recognizes Broward Center’s commitment to the Brazilian community in the South Florida region. We are honored to collaborate with individuals, organizations and companies dedicated to promoting the vibrant creative economy that is the result of cultural exchange.

Points of Culture Abroad is part of the Brazilian government’s Living Culture program. This program was established in 2004 to create a widespread network of cultural entities located in Brazil and overseas.  The goal of the Living Culture program is to provide greater access for the creation, dissemination and appreciation of Brazilian culture.

Recognizing the growing Brazilian presence in the surrounding community, the Broward Center presented its first Brazil Night concert in 2000. The concert featured Ivan Lins, Leila Pinheiro and Ed Motta.  Brazil Night was such a success that we now stage the concert annually. Performers have included an impressive array of MPB stars such as Gal Costa, Dori Caymmi, Joao Bosco, Toquinho, Jorge Ben Jor, Milton Nasicimento, Alcione, Zelia Duncan and more.

As a result of its steady popularity, Brazil Night has earned six prestigious Brazilian International Press Awards for excellence in Brazilian programming.

The alliance between the Broward Center and Brazil’s Ministry of Culture is relatively new, but it is already off to a great start. We welcome suggestions from those in our community to contribute their thoughts and ideas as we build on this unique cultural partnership.
